Ballona clean-up (Sierra Club Ballona Wetlands Restoration Committee)
Location(s)
Your opportunity to help clean up and restore a part of the Ballona Wetlands has arrived!
Sierra Club is sponsoring an "EVERY DAY IS EARTH DAY" stewardship work day event at the Ballona Wetlands - Saturday ***May 20*** from 10 am to noon. We ask that people arrive at 9:30 am, as parking and walking to
the work site will take a good 20-30 minutes. (see directions below.)
Please plan your arrival and walking shoes appropriately. (exercise AND restoration!)
We will be having at least quarterly and possibly bi-monthly work days at various Ballona Wetlands sites. We are starting in an area that was privately owned for decades, is a bit remote from previously
accessed sites, and has been sorely neglected ~ a place where trash from the entire watershed, from Dodger Stadium to UCLA, from Beverly Hills to Culver City, has ended up without clean-up and without attention for far too long. Non-native, invasive trees and bushes will also be removed.
We are sponsoring these events with assistance from the California Conservation Corps, the California Dept. of Fish & Game, and with biological expertise from the Ballona Institute.
We will meet along the Ballona Creek levee to clean up a portion of the Ballona Wetlands that has been long-neglected by any clean-up or restoration efforts. Sierra Club members, as well as any community
members interested in participating, are invited to join us.
The first 50 SIERRA CLUB members who arrive and sign up to work on at least four work days during the coming year will be given a beautiful sky-blue Sierra Stewards t-shirt.
We will meet on the south side of the creek levee off of Esplanade.
Suggest you arrive approx. 9:30 am and be ready for a nice walk.
Either park in the FREE parking lot at Del Rey Lagoon Park on Esplanade (take Culver to Esplanade and turn right....just past Convoy, turn left
into parking lot.) Then walk down Esplanade toward the Creek. By about 9:40-9:45 we will have people there to walk people up the Creek. Be prepared for a nice, lengthy walk.
OR
Take Culver to Pacific (past Esplanade) and turn right - either park in the FREE park parking lot 1/2 way down Pacific OR go to the County parking lot near the Pacific Ave. bridge where you must PAY for parking
(but don't have to walk quite as far.)
